 ACKLAM JUNIOR RUGBY

March 2008 NEWSLETTER No. 7

Since the last issue of the newsletter in November, I published a diary of events that took place at our club throughout 2007. It certainly highlights how pro-active we have been as a club, if you haven’t seen it; it is on the notice board and the club’s website.

Over the recent years we have been successful in obtaining funds to support the junior section. The bad news is the Awards for All have turned us down this year as they are unable to pay core costs to sustain projects or fund repeat activities. During assessment of our application it was noted that travel costs are part of the general running of the club and school sessions are repeat activities. I felt our application was valid considering we have a direct and indirect impact on nearly 2000 children over an annual period. Also, regards repeat activities, yes it is rugby coaching, but we are involved with more new children each year. It is worth noting that groups from the North East and particularly Middlesbrough are not applying for funds in sufficient numbers according to Awards for All, so much for that remark.

The last year has seen tremendous support from individuals and companies in providing the Juniors with donations. It appears that we will be relying on their generosity even more so if we are not to receive any funding from the authorities.

All the coaches have been given samples of clothing which can be ordered through rugbykitsolutions. There are further pieces of clothing for sale behind the bar.

The tuck shop on Sunday’s is doing well, providing funds for the teams that are involved. Well done ladies!

The 3rd December the club hosted the Teesside Tag Finals with many of the town schools participating. Julian Ellis is our coach for tag rugby, he has a talented small group of players but he needs assistance so that we can recruit and develop the tag rugby in the club. This should be possible because of the popularity of tag rugby in the schools, it is one of three core sports in the town schools.

Another large school tournament was held on the 20th December when the club hosted the Tees Valley Year 8 schools tournament, High Tunstal from Westhartlepool were the victors, beating Lawrence Jackson in the final.

Newcastle Falcons will provide a coaching session for our Juniors on Thursday 17th April, it will be nice if we can organize a BBQ for this!

The Under 16’s have a very healthy squad and their results and performances have been very encouraging. As I write, to-night they play their first game under the club’s new magnificent floodlights, I look forward to the game.

The Under 15’s squad has strengthened, the team has always been strong but now they have a healthy numbers in the squad. Best of luck to them on the 23rd March when they play Rotherham, as they aim to progress to the Yorkshire Plate Final. Give them some support as this game is at home and will k.o. at 1200.

The Under 14’s have lost only one game all season and this was to Harrogate in the Yorkshire Cup. A smart team both off the pitch with their shirts and ties and on the pitch with their new shirts.

The Under 13’s have performed really well all season. Good performances in the Yorkshire Cup and two players getting into the North Yorkshire squad. Unfortunately Richard Martin and Lewis Catterick have received serious injuries which has prevented them progressing with the county. Squad numbers are strong.

The Under 12’s have had some encouraging wins considering they are newly formed. Training numbers have been very good throughout the cold winter nights.

The Under 11’s are certainly showing signs that they are improving by beating teams that earlier in the season had beaten them. I am confident that next season we will see a useful Under 12’s side when we recruit from the senior schools.

The Tag I have mentioned above, please contact Julian Ellis on 07971061813.

I hope everyone continues to enjoy their rugby over the next two months and round it all off at the Darlington Rugby Festival on May Bank Holiday weekend.

Best Regards

Jim Ward
